Kennall Vale Woods

Kennall Vale Woods is situated near the village of Ponsanooth on the A393 between Redruth and Penryn. The 20 acre site is managed by The Cornwall Wildlife Trust. In the early 19th.century a gunpowder works was started in the valley producing high quality gunpowder for the nearby mines but in the late 19th.century when better explosives became available the gunpwder works was in decline and eventually closed early in the 20th.century. Today the relics of the industry are evident and the river passing through the valley with the steep wooded slopes and the remains of leats used by the works provide an interesting location for walks and photography. The remains of the gunpowder works became a Scheduled Monument in 1999. Parking near the woods is very limited and there is no car park in Ponsanooth village. Roadside parking in the village is possible but with due care to local residents.
