Bradford on Avon

The town of Bradford on Avon is in west Wiltshire, has a population of just over 9,000 and its history can be traced back to Roman origins. The River Avon runs through the town as does the Kennet and Avon Canal. The River Avon provided power for the woollen mills that brought wealth to the area. At the centre of the town is a bridge across the Avon that was built in Norman times. The bridge was seized by the Royalists in 1643 on their way to the Battle of Lansdowne during the English Civil War. An interesting feature in the town is the 14th. century tithe barn measuring 180ft x 30ft. which would have been used to collect taxes in the form of produce to fund the church. In more recent times the town was the home of the Avon rubber company and the Moulton folding bicycle which was designed by Sir Alex Moulton. There is a large car park near the centre of the town with toilet facilities and easy access to walks alongside the river and canal.
