Carn Grey

Carn Grey is located north east of St.Austell very close to Baal China Clay pit and in fact to access Carn Grey the same parking spot is used. Carn Grey is an sssi (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and the location of a former granite quarry. Granite from Carn Grey is thought to be the main building stone used in some of the older buildings of St. Austell including the Market House which opened in 1844. From the highest point there are distant views including Gribbin Head and the Daymark on the head. Upon parking your vehicle at the point indicated on the map by the blue marker, proceed through the adjacent gate and follow a sandy track slightly uphill for about 200 metres. Where the path forks take the right hand path around the edge of Baal Pit. A walk of about half a mile including a short climb brings you to the highest point.
